Growing up in a musically inclined family, Khup Bawi always took an interest in music since he was a child. His father directed a choir in their local church in Tedim, Chin State, and composed various worship songs. He was introduced to Gitameit Music Center, started taking piano lessons, and received his first formal music classes in his late teens. He began to build his music career by playing for local pop bands, concerts, bars, and hotels.
He performed at the Jazz Bless, Europe meets Myanmar, Annual Jazz Music Festival, Swinging Christmas Jazz, live cinematic background music and various other locally and internationally organized music events. He is also a piano teacher and provides lessons to music institutes, international schools, and private lessons in Yangon. Khup Bawi has also been prolifically playing piano at church.Khup Bawi was a classically trained musician, but he went beyond and developed an enthusiast for jazz music. Under the guidance of an excellent jazz music teacher, he picked on and became a professional jazz musician. He attended various jazz events and conferences locally and internationally, including the Thailand International Jazz Conference at Mahidol University, Thailand.
During the lock-down of Covid 19 pandemic in 2020, Khup Bawi began to have a connection with Chin elders from his hometown who played Chin traditional instruments. He began to realize his lack of knowledge in his Chin traditional instruments and cultural music. He wants to have a deep understanding and learn more abou the rich cultural and traditional music of his roots. While we are overwhelmed by popular and western music, traditional music and genres have gone underrated and almost extinct. Khup Bawi sees the urgent needs to preserve the unique Chin traditional genre and instruments.
